Reintroducing: Margaret Howell

Fashion is a cyclical game that confounds and amuses more often than not. However, sometimes the merry-go-round slings back a brand that was quietly doing its beautiful and perfect thing, oblivious to the spin cycle of the in-crowd and trend setters. Margaret Howell is such a brand.

The eponymous line started in the early 1970s by Margaret when she was inspired by the clean quality and craftsmanship of one of her father’s Jermyn Street shirts (read more about this legendary London shopping district here). A focus on cloth, make and continually-scrutinized proportions became and still are the hallmark of the brand. It’s no wonder architects and industrial designers are among her loyal customers. Her brand also has something of a cult following among the willy-nilly fashion crowd, serving as the calm in the storm for those who live and breathe in this ever-changing industry. Uber stylist Venetia Scott is a fan and works on ad campaigns.

Harris Tweed and flannels – from the inventor of the cloth Fox Brothers & Co – instill the Fall 2010 collection with a sense of heritage that is embraced and refined by the perfectly-cut, unadorned shapes from Ms. Howell. My favorite piece – her Woven Check Sport Coat, an exclusive color way of a traditional Harris Tweed pattern.

Her clothes are the ideal way to throw a cog in the quick spinning wheel of fashion, and make your own understatement about style… Something about the “wearer” and not the “clothes” making the man?

Margaret Howell’s NEW men’s Autumn/Winter 2010 collection is available exclusively at Barneys New York, Madison Avenue or online.
