PINK; STILL FOR GIRLS

I was five years old the first time I saw a photo of my mother dancing with my Grandfather in a dusty-pink, satin cocktail dress.  It was strapless with a full bubble-skirt and she had worn it to her engagement party at The Eden Roc Hotel on Miami Beach in 1960, with silk pumps the exact same shade.  I imagined her signature evening perfume, Bal de Versailles; a scent I came to associate with special evenings out, her casual flip teased into a Jackie Kennedy-esque bouffant.

Not yet in command of the finely-honed tastes of a Barneys New York Beauty Guru, when asked what she should wear, regardless of season occasion, the answer was inevitably;

“The pink-satin! The pink-satin!”

For me, the color pink will always be synonymous with classic femininity; all heels and gloves and compacts and handbags and pearls, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.

Then again, part of the art of being a woman means knowing when not to be too much of a lady…
